Synchronicitously, Unthank Books today publishes Unthology 2, featuring Brother Paul's story The Poets of Radial City.

Always crashing in the same car?

Car installations - crashed or otherwise - seem to be this year's thing at international exhibitions. After the crashed cars in the sculpture exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery (see post below) comes a a car crash opera in the Hungarian pavillion at the Venice Biennale, using one crashed BMW and a video recording of two opera singers in the back of a taxi performing a libretto that is, or sounds like, the transcript of a police interview.

An upcoming festival of time-based art the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art also features installations by artist Jesse Sugarman with cars rendered undriveable and transformed into sculptural installations, as well as a video projection by James Benning featuring cars driving through concrete tunnels.

The theme of the summer could be "J.G. Ballard drives again". The soundtrack? A mix of multiple versions of "Warm Leatherette".

Founded in 2004, The Los Angeles Urban Rangers are dedicated to equipping themselves and others to ask questions about the abundant and often unseen complexities of everyday places, whether freeway, neighborhood, park, office park, or living room. Sara Daleiden, Therese Kelly, Jenny Price, and Emily Scott are the core members of the group, which is headquartered in Los Angeles. Recent projects include a series of public "safaris" and interpretive tools elucidating Malibu's contentious public-private coastline (included in Actions: What You Can Do With the City, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal; Open City: Designing Coexistence?, 4th International Architecture Biennale, Rotterdam;Performing Public Space, La Casa del Túnel, Tijuana; and Just Space(s), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, 2007–10); a trail system through the only "wild" plot in Almere, the Netherlands, as a project for Museum de Paviljoens, 2008–10; and a tour of the Whitney Museum from an eagle-eye perspective for the 2008 Whitney Biennial with Fritz Haeg's Animal Estates 1.0. The collective also participated in the 2010 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, which included a residency that launched this most recent phase of their Public Access 101 series, focused on Downtown L.A.

Wake up BUU!

The BUU blog has been dormant for a while, and now summer is here and most correspondents will be in holiday mode or otherwise occupied. So here is a short report to ease us into summer mode...

First an image from the streets of Dublin, early June 2011. It's probably a tag for somebody operating under the name "Zero One" but it could also be a general comment on the state of things, when culture goes digital and the economy evaporates into a cloud of zeroes and ones.

Below, images from a small photography exhibition at Tate Modern, looking at new directions in documentary photography. This is work by Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov, with whom I was not familiar before. His exhibition was a highlight of my recent London visit. His images combine humour and pathos, a light touch and a keen sense of observation, while his sense for colour and his casual approach to capturing images reminds of William Eggleston.

Also in London, the Saatchi Gallery has a big exhibition of sculpture, most of which did not say much to me, but there were one or two interesting works. The crashed cars (below) wrapped around posts, By Dirk Skreber, were among the most interesting things, reminiscent of the historic exhibition of crashed cars by JG Ballard at the ICA in the late 1960's.

Also worthy of note is the installation by David Batchelor, a combination of light boxes and sculptures made from found plastic materials, continuing the artist's twin interests in colour as a primary concern, and the use of cheap, found, debased materials.

And below, another tag, seen in London. "Dump Cameron" is presumably a sentiment shared by many Brits at the moment, but is not something that is likely to happen in the near political future, unfortunately. It seems I am not the only one to have noticed this tag. Here it is again on Flickr. The same contributor to Flickr also posted this, the Doctors Commons, which also corresponds to another of my recent images from London, a plaque indicating the previous site of Baynard's Castle. Our camera eyes must be synchronised.... Finally, another image from Dublin. A word on the wall of a derelict pub, and this piece of graffiti seems to sum up the state of the world in summer 2011.

Sunday 19 December was the final day of the Bull. Miletic exhibition Mise en Abyme at RAM Galleri, Oslo. During the final hour of the show, as a finissage, Jeremy Welsh interviewed the artists about this exhibition, about their experiences at the Art Institute of San Fancisco and about their collaborative working practice. The exhibition featured a new work, Revolution Peripherique, a two-screen video work recorded on the Periphique ring road, Paris, as well as Par Hasard, the single-screen work focussing on The Eiffel Tower, that was also shown in the Citie Re-imagined exhibition in Novi Sad.

BUU is sad to acknowledge the departure of Don Van Vliet, Captain Beefheart, who died on 17th. December 2010. The music of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band was the soundtrack of my youth and to this day his albums rate among my all-time favourites. The influence can be heard in numerous bands who have emerged since the 1980's, when Don Van Vliet himself retired from music-making to concentrate on painting. See the fan site Radar Station for comprehensive information and listings, as well as a variety of video clips on You Tube. stylus – a project by Ann Hamilton

The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts presents stylus, a project created by installation artist Ann Hamilton in response to the Pulitzer building, which was designed by architect Tadao Ando. The exhibition is on view through January 22, 2011.

As a visual artist whose contributions to contemporary art span three decades, Ann Hamilton's installations are notable in part for their capacity to weave a broad palette of media into engaging sensory environments. Conceived in response to the Pulitzer's mission to be both sanctuary and laboratory, stylus is structured around live acoustic elements. The sound design was developed in collaboration with composer and sound designer Shahrokh Yadegari.

Accompanying the project is a similarly experiential multimedia online catalogue, located at annhamilton.pulitzerarts.org. Visitors can explore Ann Hamilton's work and immerse themselves in the images, video, and audio that fill the installation.

Bull MIletic's latest work "Mise en abyme" is currently showing at Galleri Ram, Oslo.

The exhibition Bull.Miletic: Mise en Abyme features the artists’ most recent body of work conceived during their residency at Cité International des Arts in Paris, France. The works in the exhibition are based on historical representations of modernity in contemporary Paris with a particular focus on the city’s constant negotiation between the future and the past.

In his seminal essay Paris, Capital of the Nineteenth Century, Walter Benjamin suggested that 19th-century Paris was the origin of modernity itself. Once a city defined by groundbreaking technology and artistic accomplishments, contemporary Paris succeeded in preserving the future as an idea of the past. By drawing direct references to the radically restructured understanding of time and space emerging in the 19th-century progressive Paris, the works are connecting current discourses of the effects of the networked society to its industrial origins.

Bull.Miletic are Synne Bull and Dragan Miletic who live and work together in Oslo, Norway. Central to their artistic practice is the question of how moving images form conceptions of space and influence our visual perception of reality. Their videos examine cities, architecture and landscape as containers of emotions, memories, and political decisions. Their artistic residency at Cité International des Arts was enabled through the generous support of Ingrid Lindbäck Langaards foundation.

Pratt Manhattan Gallery will present "You Are Here → Mapping the Psychogeography of New York City," an exhibition of work by a selection of contemporary artists that will map the emotional terrain of the world's most famous and influential urban center, New York City, and explore the effect of the city's powerful moods on those who live and work here. "You Are Here" will run from September 24 through November 6, 2010, and will be celebrated with an opening reception on Thursday, September 23 from 6–8 PM. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public.

Contributing artists—some New Yorkers, others not—were invited to use inventive cartographic concepts to reflect the city's abundant, colliding moods. The resulting projects reveal a range of reactions to the city's heightened levels of stimulus, some energizing (discovery, delight, amusement, ambition, solidarity) and others melancholic (longing, loss, vulnerability, anxiety, isolation).

"You Are Here" is guest-curated by Katharine Harmon, author of The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009) and You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination (Princeton Architectural Press, 2003).

"The exhibition features artworks and conceptual projects that map a frenzied cityscape," Harmon explains. "I like wondering whether the world's most adrenalized and artistic city elicits more emotional responses than others. Mapping is an intriguing way to approach the question, especially at a time when artists are using mapping concepts in such ingenious ways," she added.

Psychogeography was defined in 1955 by theorist Guy Debord as "the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals." Another definition is "a whole toy box full of playful, inventive strategies for exploring cities...just about anything that takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape."

Works created specifically for "You Are Here" include:

• a three-dimensional map of the lower Manhattan skyline made of a Jell-O-like material by Liz Hickok
• an anxiety map of the five boroughs lit by sweat-powered batteries by Daniela Kostova and Olivia Robinson
• a "Loneliness Map" from Craigslist's Missed Connections by Ingrid Burrington
• a scratch-and-sniff map of New Yorkers' smell preferences by Nicola Twilley
• a cemetery map of Polish ancestors' graves by Kim Baranowski
• an installation constructed from city ephemera by Pratt faculty member Robbin Ami Silverberg
• personal maps created from a call for submissions by the Hand Drawn Map Association including works by Tony Dowler, Will Haughery, Janine Nichols, Yumi Roth, Gowri Savoor, Rob Servo, Krista Shaffer, Kees Touw, Dean Valadez, and Shane Watt
• a series of mapped reflections on the extinction of the passenger pigeon and the ascendancy of the rock dove by Miranda Maher

“Living Architectures” is a series of films that seeks to develop a way of looking at architecture, which turns away from the current trend of idealizing the representation of our architectural heritage. The cult of perfect, disembodied forms entirely devoid of people, inevitably leads to a break-up between architecture and living space.

Through these films, Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine put into question the fascination with the picture, which covers up the buildings with preconceived ideas of perfection, virtuosity and infallibility, in order to demonstrate the vitality, fragility and vulnerable beauty of architecture as recounted and witnessed by people who actually live in, use or maintain the spaces they have selected.

Thus, their intention is to talk about architecture, or rather to let architecture talk to us, from an "inner" point of view, both personal and subjective. Unlike most movies about architecture, these films focus less on explaining the building, its structure and its technical details than on letting the viewer enter into the invisible bubble of the daily intimacy of some icons of contemporary architecture. Through a series of moments and fragments of life, an unusually spontaneous portrait of the building would emerge. This experiment presents a new way of looking at architecture and broadens the field of its representation.

The films have been presented on several international venues from the beginning of 2010. Including Storefront for Art and Architecture in NYC (USA), The Architecture Foundation, London (UK), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (France) and The Architecture Centre, Bristol (UK) and met with very good receptions. A special edition of the films is presented at the 12th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

The authors are present at the opening and will hold a 30 min presentation of the project!

The first day of the Urban Images symposium in Oslo proved to be a success. The programme was both challenging and varied, illuminating a variety of positions relative to a discussion of relationships between architecture, urbanism and the moving image. As is often the case at conferences, it would have been good if there was more space for debate. Quite often the audience seemed to be so overwhelmed by the volume and density of information coming from the speakers that it was not really possible to elaborate a nuanced discussion within the short framework of a Q&A session after the lecture. But nobody could complain about a lack of input. Perhaps appropriately after a day considering the high density narratives of city space and cinematic representation we left the auditorium dazed and slightly disoriented. I look forward to the second day of the symposium!

Mediated Cities

Every year the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture hosts a symposium in the series Atmosphere. These symposia explore the intangible and overlooked dimensions of architecture and the city: those difficult to pin down, document, record with conventional instruments and methodologies.

Atmosphere 2011 will focus on Mediated Cities, the image of architecture, space, and place in cinema and other media. There is a long history of “city films” which have portrayed the experience of urban life, exploring through that experience the qualities and conundrums of modern life. Today that history is updated as cinema is supplemented by new forms of media: video, internet, portable media, and so on. These new forms of media emerge from and articulate shifts and developments in architecture and cities as well as global geographies, technologies and politics. They include imaginary as well as documentary narratives, and works that blur the two. They are also being incorporated, rapidly, into the practice of all design disciplines.

Confirmed guests include Edward Dimendberg, Daniel Doz, Janine Marchessault, Leonie Sandercock, Eunate Torres-Modrego, [The User].

The symposium will be presented in partnership with the University of Manitoba Department of English, Film and Theatre, the Winnipeg Film Group, and Video Pool.

Call for Proposals:

The Faculty of Architecture would like to invite proposals for academic papers, panels, presentations of film, video and other media, and creative works/public events in association with the symposium. A detailed Call for Proposals in both English and French is available at the symposium website. Deadline is Oct. 15 for both academic proposals and creative projects; participants will be notified by the end of October. Creative projects are required to confirm a venue in writing by the end of November, 2010.

Atmosphere is seeking funding to assist some participants to attend the symposium. To be eligible for this funding, proposals should be submitted as early as possible.

Historical panoramas used to offer a view of a city- or landscape - as seen from the point of view of an artist or photographer. Be it in painting, print or photography, the viewer received an often entertaining, informative and complete overview of a certain place at a certain time.

Digital media and networking have widened the scope of street, urban and landscape views to include 360” zoomable, interactive views, maps and directories - each in turn equipped with multiple options for further layers of information. Former blind spots might be rapidly disappearing in the ever more detailed complexity of available and accessible information. Furthermore the subject of individuality, the right to control, manipulate, protect and reveal personal information is challenged and hollowed out. The digital fingerprints left behind everywhere endanger our bank accounts and our privacy. In separate developments the decoding of the human gene is also leading to radical new perspectives regarding our rights to access information, questioning the individuality of humans and the way societies are organized.

Having arrived at this interchange, the artists, collectors, theoreticians and scientists participating in the symposium will present their material and ideas on the historical, current and emerging understanding of the observation, mapping and organization of different types of landscapes - beginning with historical viewing devices, the understanding and representation of landscapes (Werner Nekes) to the analysis of the genetic decoding of the individual and its social and cultural implications (Kári Stefánsson), further to an artists perspective of contemporary architecture, utopia and urban space (Marjolijn Dijkman) to the modelling, playing and interference with, as well as the questioning of, contemporary networked and mediatised societies (Michelle Teran).

WERNER NEKES
(b. 1944) lives in Mülheim an der Ruhr in Germany
Since 1965, filmmaker and media artist Werner Nekes has produced over 100 films and his work has been presented internationally at major museums and festivals.
Furthermore, Nekes has compiled one of the most important private collections of artifacts documenting 500 years of pre-cinematographic experiments as well as developments in the early history of film, focusing on spatial and temporal principles of representation.

MARJOLEIN DIJKMAN
(b. 1978) lives in Rotterdam in The Netherlands, Brussels in Belgium and Saint Mihiel in France.

Through her diverse work Dutch artist Marjolijn Dijkman often considers the foundations of how we perceive and experience our surroundings – the conventions and categories which underlie the comprehension, or not, of the world around us. Ranging from photographic archives and films, to landscape interventions and the organization of exhibitions and experimental residencies, Dijkman’s practice has concerned itself with futurology, public space, knowledge organization, cartography, utopian architecture or environmentalism, for example, with a particular emphasis on collaboration.

KÁRI STEFÁNSSON, M.D., DR. MED., Executive Chairman and President of Research
(b.1949) lives and works in Reykjavik in Iceland
Kári Stefánsson, M.D., Dr. Med. founded deCODE in August 1996. Dr. Stefánsson was previously a professor of Neurology, Neuropathology and Neuroscience at Harvard University and Director of Neuropathology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1983 to 1993, he held faculty positions in Neurology, Neuropathology and Neurosciences at the University of Chicago. Dr. Stefánsson received his M.D. and Dr. Med. from the University of Iceland and is board-certified in neurology and neuropathology in the United States. Dr. Stefansson is recognized as a leading figure in human genetics. He has shaped deCODE's scientific approach and been actively engaged in leading its gene discovery work, serving as senior author on most of the company's publications in major scientific journals.

MICHELLE TERAN
(b. 1966) lives and works in Berlin in Germany

Born in Canada, Michelle Teran explores the interaction between media and social networks in urban environments. She develops performances, with the audience often participating via the staging of urban interventions such as guided tours, walks and open-air projections, participatory installations and happenings.
One of her recent projects, Buscando al Sr. Goodbar (2009), is a threefold tour through the Spanish town Murcia simultaneously taking place by bus as well as on Google Earth and YouTube.

Michelle received the Transmediale Award 2010, the Prix Ars Electronica honorary mention (2005, 2010) as well as the Vida 8.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition.

If anybody reading this happens to be going to Dublin in the course of the summer, a new exhibition at Irish Museum of Modern Art by cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa looks like it is well worth a visit. The press release for the show states:

"Overlapping is an exhibition by one of Cuba's leading contemporary artists Carlos Garaicoa, whose work explores the social fabric of our cities through the examination of its architecture. The exhibition brings together new and recent works comprising sculpture, installation, drawing, video and photography, which explore the themes of architecture and urbanism, politics and history, and narrative and human culture. Since the early 1990s Garaicoa has developed his multi-faceted practice as a means to critique modernist utopian architecture and the collapse of 20th-century ideologies using the city as his point of departure."

On Wednesday 7th. July the exhibition Cities Reimagined, with video and film from Norway, opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad. 9 video works are presented in the show, which has been organised by Dragan Miletic & Synne Bull in collaboration with museum curator Sanja Kajic Mladenov. The museum has published a 198 page catalogue which includes presentations of all the works/artists and essays by the curator as well as by Dr. Jonathan Lahey Dronsfield and Branislav Dimetrijevic. The exhibition will be open until 27th. July. The entire programme runs for approximately fifty minutes and will be repeated later in the afternoon.

On Acoustic Territories:

From underground environments to the home, Brandon LaBelle traces the cultural and social movements of auditory life. Acoustic Territories continues the author’s interest in sonic culture and extends his earlier work, Background Noise: Perspectives on Sound Art, elaborating on the dynamics of sonic materiality and experience. LaBelle follows sound as it appears in specific auditory designs, as it is mobilized within various cultural projects, and ultimately queries how it comes to circulate through everyday life as a medium for social transformation.

Brandon LaBelle is an artist and writer. His work explores the space between sound and sociality, using performance and on-site constructions as creative supplements to existing conditions. He is the author of “Background Noise: Perspectives on Sound Art” (2006) and “Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life” (2010). His ongoing project to build a library of radio memories was presented at Casa Vecina, Mexico City in 2008. He also collaborates within the collective working group, Surface Tension, and the working team, e+l.

In cooperation with the Planetary Collegium, University of Plymouth, England, TEKS – Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre, Trondheim, Norway, is hosting the 11th Consciousness Reframed International Research Conference, with the title of MAKING REALITY REALLY REAL. The conference will be part of Norway´s new biennial for art and technology, Meta.Morf, that takes place in Trondheim from October 7 to November 7, 2010.

The Consciousness Reframed conference series was founded by Roy Ascott at the University of Wales in 1997. Consciousness Reframed is a forum for trans-disciplinary inquiry into art, science, technology, design and consciousness, drawing upon the expertise and insights of artists, designers, architects, performers, musicians, writers, scientists, and scholars, usually from at least 20 countries.

Making Reality Really Real

The status of our reality is uncertain. We know that the material world experienced through our senses is a representation of quantum phenomena that can be observed at another level of resolution. But are sub-atomic particles in turn representations of something beyond, something that approaches the really Real? Virtual Reality and the Metaverse provide a vivid and consequential normality that may come to render the material world largely obsolete for those who live largely online or in cyberspace. Until recently, we adapted our sensibilities to fit into separate boxes, — real, virtual, spiritual, and so on — which we saw as serving separate ontologies. That separation has now merged into a continuous flow, in which telecommunications, computing, nano technology, and pharmacology play significant roles. How might the artist address these issues, and how might the arts explore them further?

Presentations and papers are invited from artists, scientists and theorists in all fields!

An interesting article on The Guardian's website today about street photography and the problems experienced by photographers who face police harassment for working in public spaces. An organization called I'm A Photographer, Not A Terrorist, has been created to counter the repressive tendencies that arise from anti-terrorism laws and fears about pedophilia. There is a large amount of material on Flickr dedicated to street photography and a number of forthcoming publications dedicated to the practice. There's also some interesting stuff at AmericansuburbX.

There will be a seminar entitled "Urban Images: Re-imagining the City Through Moving Images" at the Academy of Art in Oslo from 9 - 11 September. The organizers are now calling for abstracts for short presentations. The Urban Images symposium focuses on the field of artistic film and video related to architecture and urban space. The main objective is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of artists and scholars in order to provide an opportunity for debate on the relationship between the development of the architectural imaginary through avant-garde movements and contemporary production in time-based media. The program is structured in four thematic sessions with specific focus on moving images’ influence on urban architecture, urban architecture relationship to avant-garde film, the city as a source for artistic film and video, and reflections on urban architecture in recent film and video art.

Okin OPEN SITE Realized by a group of artists interested in the aesthetic possibilities of play and commentary, Okin OPEN SITE, is a series of installations and interventions about the ongoing deconstruction and ramifications of the precarious Okin Apartments.Though the area is a dangerous construction site, there are still a handful... of residents living in the apartments as the demolition occurs. In this literal and conceptual grey zone, ideas about illegality, home, deconstruction and uncertainty form the basis of Okin OPEN SITE. This one-day art event is an invitation to view the last remaining blocks of the well known apartment complex before its complete deconstruction. Though it has a new name, Eco Park, the future of the Okin area is not yet known. In dispute over the demolition of the large scale housing site, is one of the last remaining residents, artist Hwayong Kim. The Okin Apartment complex, built in the early seventies, is nestled under the beautiful Mount Inwang and stream; the site was famously painted by a highly characteristic brush and ink painter in 18th century artist Gyeomjae Jeongseon.The artists involved in Okin OPEN SITE – Eunji Cho, Shiu Jin, Hwayoung Kim, Jooyoung Lee, Yuk King Tan, Joungmin Yi – create subtle interventions inside deserted and occupied apartments. The installations reveal different attitudes and facets of the Okin situation, and are made in quick consideration that the work may need to change as rapidly as the buildings disappear. This peculiar craft has been floating around the Bergen harbour for the last few days. I have no idea what it is or what it is doing but it appears to be some kind of observation device, or else an instrument for communicating with other worlds.... Who knows?

In a similar vein, Amanda Steggell will open an exhibition next week at Sound of Mu, Oslo, with images from her Antenna Aesthetics series. Definitely worth a visit for anyone in Oslo on March 20th.

I am sitting in the transit area of Hong Kong airport, drinking Carlsberg ???? beer (after three months of excellent aussie ales, this is a sad comedown) and being lulled by robotic versions of anglo-euro-american christmas songs on the airport sound system. If Santa Claus is coming to town, I wish he'd just get on with it then f*** off! Anybody want to start an "I Hate Xmas" blog?

But anyway, goodwill to (most) all men & women. But lets send all the useless politicians of the world to a melting icecap or to the scorching interior of Australia where the chances of rain seem to be diminishing by the day. Migrant shopping trolleys

An image from a growing collection of photographs of shopping trolleys encountered in various locations around the world. A daily sight in most cities, and sometimes in more isolated places. It would be interesting to know how and where they migrate, and how often. With electronic tags / tracking devices it would be possible to follow their progress as they move around the city. Somebody could presumably write an iPhone application that would do the trick!

I wonder what the economic consequence of shopping trolley migration actually is? One thing is for sure - the supermarket chains are not interested in allowing disappearing trolleys to eat into their profits, which means that the cost is presumably passed on to us, their customers. A further extrapolation of this thought leads one to conclude that it is therefore us, the customers, who own this fleet of migrant shopping trolleys that is distributed throughout the cities of the world. Since this distributed ownership is extremely diffuse and impossible to formalize or co-ordinate, it follows that co-owners must all all have equal rights of access and shared responsibility for the fleet. So what should it be used for? A few simple suggestions for guidelines:

Fair Use:
1 - Homeless people who use the trolleys to transport their positions from place to place: this must be considered a priority, on the basis of need.
2 - Racing: an ecologically sound alternative to motor sport: races to be arranged along the lines of 2 man bob sleigh events, on the main streets of major cities, which would be closed to motor traffic.

Unfair use
1 - Drunken yuppies who fill the trolleys with booze, use them as mobile bars, then abandon or even destroy the vehicle when the party is over: to be actively discouraged, with extreme prejudice, if necessary!
2 - Prototype submarines; it is blindingly obvious that this is never going to work, so submerging the trolleys can only be considered a useless and antisocial act.

The blog has been pretty dormant recently. Everybody is presumably occupied with other projects at the moment. In the meantime, a few things have popped up that are relevant and interesting. A seminar entitled "Photography as Alternative Urbanism", happening in London on November 10th. looks like an event designed for BUU! Hopefully someone involved in this discussion will be able to attend.

My current neighbourhood, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, is an inner city neighbourhood with a rich, colourful and not always peaceful history. It was a site of conflict in the 1970's, when developers wanted to flatten the district to make way for more high rise buildings. Local residents and unions managed to prevent this happening, and the stories of these conflicts were recorded in a series of murals - a few of which still survive. There is a blog devoted to the murals, with some photographic documentation. Wikipedia also has a substantial section on murals, graffiti and street art in Sydney.

I continue my wanderings around the city, gradually moving out into less central areas. The last few days have been spent seeking out Ballardian urban landscapes around expressways, subways and gaps between concrete buildings. I've been trying to find out if there has been any "hardcore" psychogeographic activity around Sydney, but all I came up (via google) with was an example of the kind of "psychogeo light" that the media do periodically and some rather lacklustre academic papers.

Laneways: By George! Hidden Networks

"Laneways: By George! Hidden Networks" is the title of a temporary public art project currently on show n Sydney. It forms part of the larger public art showcase "Art & About" which is, in turn, part of a month-long festival of food and culture entitled "Crave Sydney".

Produced by Steffen Lehmann, an urban designer, author and curator, the project aims to bring art to hidden, forgotten or overlooked urban spaces, while challenging understandings of the roles of architecture and art. A map published in the guide brochure for "Art + About" and also available online, allows visitors to navigate to a series of narrow alleyways between George Street and Pitt Street in the downtown business district of central Sydney. The projects are all the result of collaboration between groups that include artists, architects, designers, urbanists and others. The project has high ambitions in terms of the discussions it hopes to provoke about urban regeneration, sustainability, our understanding of public space, etc. Whether it will achieve that goal is questionable, but what it does succeed in doing is to create a series of "incidents" that will certainly arouse curiosity, and, at best, provide the accidental visitor with a stimulating and intriguing experience.

All of the individual installations are interesting in the way they interact with a particular urban environment, though the quality varies considerably, and only a minority would stand up to sustained critique as autonomous works of art. Several of the pieces come too close to the kind of "event scenography" that could just as easily belong to an advertising campaign or an elaborate outdoor party, and thereby lose any critical edge that may have been intended.

For me, the single most successful piece is "Forgotten Songs", an installation consisting of a large number of bird cages suspended about four metres above the street, incorporating several loudspeakers that play back recordings of birdsong. The work changes the environment subtly rather than dramatically, and creates a sense of enchantment that draws in the spectator. Another project that aims to bring nature into the midst of the urban environment is "Infinity Forest" which is not so much a forest as a very small grove of silver birch trees inside a mirrored box. The mirrored walls create an illusion of profuse growth, but this is undermined by the fact that the trees are growing in black plastic bags, and they are saplings rather than full-grown trees. So the effect is more like being in a psychedelic display at a garden centre than being in a forest. The result is mildly amusing, but hardly challenging.

A more unsettling experience was to walk through Bridge Lane where a series of strange, pink, hairy sculptures appeared to be growing out of the brick walls. It felt not so much like a dialogue with the space, as an invasion by alien life forms. In the middle of the day these grotesque items had a kind of gothic comic effect, but encountered unsuspectedly at night they could prove to be seriously disturbing to the faint-hearted.

Forgotten Songs, not to be forgotten!

The Infinity Forest - not very infinite and not quite a forest, but an amusing diversion.

The Urban Barcode - an installation of white fluorescent tubes in a dark alleyway. Quite effective, though not quite the "Giant Barcode" promised in the brochure. And the "pocket-sized open air cinema" that goes with it seemed to be turned off.

I Dwell In the City And The City Dwells In Me. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid!

The Meeting Place, a Serra-esque sculptural installation in yellow nylon material that changes the architechtural space of Little Hunter Street, narrowing it to a small gap that would encourage physical contact between passers-by.

Seven Metre Bar which, according to the publicity should "combine the landscape of weather and topography with the architecture of a catastrophe and the interactive technology of video games. Seven Meter Bar highlights inaction on climate change" But actually, it looks like a small piece of a Jason Rhoades installation that has just been dropped into the street.

Conclusion: full points for a good initiative and for the intention of creating productive disruptions in the urban environment, but not more than 5/10 for the result; most of the works are just not good enought to stand up to the ambition of the project's mission statement.

Okin Apartment Project in Seoul

Okin Apartment was originally built in 1971, by the City Metropolitan Government near the Palaces- is the biggest and most spectacular Palace in Korea, and it was the Main Palace of the Chosun dynasty. Okin Apartment will be torn down soon to make a Green Park around Inwang mountian. Inwang mountain literally means "Benevolent King Mountain". It is located south of Bukhan mountain and from it you can see the Palace and the presidential house.

A few weeks ago We (group of artists from Seoul) organized a holiday event at the Apartment where most tenants are moved out but some are not given either an apartment or enough money to move other places and still negotiating for the right of tenants to move new places. This issue is not solved yet but the City Metropolitan Government started to tearing down the apartment. I think it is actually very meaningful place for us artists involved in. We will be having talks, walking tours and events, in terms of exploring and excavating an intimate relationship with architecture, history as well as art expression.

The Camels are Back in Town!

Just outside the Botanical Gardens in Oslo Circus Merano are preparing for their annual show. I had the pleasure of walking past the site for a couple of days on my way to rehearsals at Black Box Theatre, and while there is a lot to be said about keeping animals in captivity I have to say that the camels seem to enjoy their mobile lifestyle.

They travel in style - with their own personnel to take care of their daily hygiene and massage needs, after which they have morning hay together, and all out in the fresh air.

loathe the freeways, big box stores and bland aesthetics
stereotypical of suburbia may secretly root for the end of sprawl,
but demographic trends indicate that exurban growth is still on the

In a future where limited natural resources will force us to find
better solutions for density and efficiency, what will become of the
cul-de-sacs, cookie-cutter tract houses and generic strip malls that

Amsterdam in Letters

Amsterdam in Letters is a photo book by Dutch photographer Maarten Helle, documenting typography on buildings throughout the city of Amsterdam. In particular, the book concentrates on typography that is integrated with the architecture, and it is divided into sections that deal with lettering realized in metal, stone and ceramics. The book covers both historical and contemporary sites and is in part an archeological project, looking at the remnants of businesses or institutions that are no longer, but that are remembered through the signs and slogans that remain. The site changes identity, the text remains, the relationship between building and text becomes destabilised, mysterious, maybe even unintentionally ironic.

The book includes an introduction/contextual essay by Willem Ellenbroek, in both Dutch and English. It is visually rich and is an interesting contribution to the ongoing research into urban environments.

I had my first encounter with the town Drammen last week. It is a town near Oslo. I had some hours to kill waiting for a train to bring me from Bergen to Grimstad. I fell in love with this place. It is the perfect town for waiting. It seems that it had (has?) a bad reputation. A high amount of new developments and new building is going on. Not sure if it works however. There are some nice leftovers of urban archeology from the last century I would like to share with you. I would furthermore like to suggest to BUU to have the next conference in this town. It is the perfect environment for it!

I made link with BUU on the blog Collective DB workshop which im running with my students during this summer in Korea. its all written in Korean but at least you could follow some pics and will post videos(final outcome of the workshop, hopefully) soon. This workshop is collaborative ongoing project-ish. we are talking about urbanism/Precarious, hidden cities/forgotten part, memory, creative exchange(with immaterial skills) with ideas of collecting, tracing, following, How does one occupy public space? etc. As part of our ongoing investigations into public and private places; play, Non-Art, and interaction. we are going to construct some events(will be videoed) to explore these notions. Each event can exist at multiple times and is an ongoing event in which everyone can participate and which could (and hopefully students will) extend beyond the limits of this workshop.

I will add a few words. I think it is worth considering creating more temporary urban art. Too much art in public space is (sort of) permanent. One could think of circulating art, monuments and buildings over the town. Or to have art under specific circumstances. Like this Muttian Fountain i videoed at the main entrance of a shopping centre. It only appears during heavy rain. At moments when nobody is leaving or entering anyway because of weather conditions. A spontaneous fountain is an outcome to kill the time! ... or is this building just spontaneously crying for us ...

There, right in the middle, that white thing is a huge boat from some Russian billionaire who came to visit Norway incognito. No, it is not Noah's boat. It is a yacht designed by poor Philip Starck and it is also not called 'Arc' but just 'A'. Should I write more or is the picture of the world we live in clear enough?

Tullinløkka, Oslo, the dead space behind the National Museum, the place where the new museum will not be. Car park. Temporary art space. Hole in the city. The cigar box on legs that was once part of "Kiss The Frog" (the frog got kissed and departed long ago) now seems like a forlorn reminder of all that might have been but never was. Now they have tried to reinvent and revitalise the place with this summer's big stunt "affektert veggmaleri akslererende faenskap assume vivid focus", a post-psychedelic labyrinth that spills out, through a fanged vagina/mouth with inflatable tongue onto the sad and lonely car park that tries to look like a carnival ground. Entering the installation I think "this is a bit like acid rock". Only without the acid and without the rock. There has been a lot of post- or neo psychedelic art in the past few years, while the original stuff has also been re-examined through exhibitions like Tate Liverpool & MoMA's "Summer of Love" and the recent Allan Aldridge retrospective at The Design Museum in London. It's a tendency I've observed with some interest, especially in the work of younger artists who have picked up the references without being burdened by historical baggage or by a sort of calvinist guilt that shuns the decorative and decadent surfaces of psychedelia. But in this case it just felt like a pastiche of a pastiche, overblown, overdone and, simply... over. It's too late, baby. It's like the museum has found itself trapped inside a Bony M song - "crazy like a fool / for Daddy Kool". But D. Kool is nowhere to be found; Daddy Kool has left the building.I wandered alone through the labyrinthine installation thinking "where's the party?" and feeling a bit foolish carrying around the collage mask with red/green lenses that is supposed to let you see the exhibition in vivid 3d. (you don't)

The brochure/exhibition guide is a lexicon of drivel including such gems as "the group remixes a floorsticker from Central Park in New York producing a "carpet" that covers part of the outdoor area". Meaning that they have painted some grafitti-like stuff on the asphalt. It's about time the word "remixed" was erased from the vocabulary of permissible terms; to say it has become overused would be a massive understatement.

The brochure concludes

"avaf mixes up a cocktail with elements from Brazilian carnival to prog-rock album covers to Norwegian textile art, to children's colouring books to Tibetan devotional art. Enjoy!" Sorry. I'd like to, really, but it makes me feel nauseous, like too much bad, sweet ice cream.

A couple of kilometers away at the LNM gallery there is an exhibition called "Wall to Wall" with wall paintings by six contemporary Norwegian artists. Proceed there directly, avoiding Tullinløkka. You'll save time and feel better.

Hello BUUs,

there is a thread on an email list for people with synaesthesia I follow that is currently discussing various synaesthetic responses to sounds of the city. I am posting a couple of comments by list members that might be of interest, but as it is a closed list, the responses will have to remain anonymous:

"Whenever I travel on the London Underground system, I always get the unmistakable and very strong taste of rhubarb. Squealing vehicle brakes bring on the taste of very tart and sharp tangerines. One of my Labrador's bark tastes like what I can only describe as cold custard."

"As a student in Boston years ago, I had to stay focused on where I was walking near the subway. All of the high pitched noises upon train arrival would block my vision so that I couldn't see where I was going. It's similar when I walk down a street; I just stay focused on what's ahead by a few feet just in case my sight is blocked by cars and trucks."

"Driving, for me, is always a gamble. You have colors and shapes whizzing by you. Round, all encompassing, colored sounds blaring from people's horn honks (I live in Houston; loads of traffic). Then there are other road noises combined with my own radio's shapely and colorful music I try to drown out all the outside noises with. When I first get in the car and start driving, everything is okay. But, once the shock runs through me the first time I almost run into someone's bumper or don't see someone cutting me off - the realization that all of these distractions are interfering with my own and others' safety -- anxiety takes over.

These distractions, without anxiety, happen in settings where there are large groups of people in close proximity, too. In these settings, it's not so much dangerous or potential meltdown material but it is uncomfortable and a bit mind-boggling. I've become separated from the friends I'm there with or forgotten altogether momentarily where I was originally headed. I'm sure this is more annoying to the folks I'm with more than myself. But, one thing is for sure: it's not social anxiety. It's the overload of too many sounds, shapes and colors."

In response to Amanda's post below - a city built on Dub would shake its own foundations and rock its inhabitants to their core! I have just watched the dvd of "Dub Echoes" a documentary on the evolution of dub, directed by Brazilian film maker Bruno Natal. The film includes interviews with musicians, producers, engineers and dj's, including some old originals like U-Roy, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Bunny Lee, as well as representatives of the current wave of post-dub electronica like Kode 9 and Roots Manuva. The sonic engineering of dub is explored and explained as a structural principle of much, if not most, electronic dance music, hip hop and other forms of contemporary urban music. See also an edition of the online publication Vague Terrain dedicated to digital dub - including several downloadable MP3 files, articles and interviews, including DJ Spooky, who is also featured in Dub Echoes.

On an almost entirely different note, another short video to watch is The Guardian's report on a tour of London by Peter Blake's Art Bus. In the sixties, (Sir) Peter Blake was known as one of the originators of British Pop Art, along with Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi, and the designer of the album cover for Sgt Peppers. Later he was also known as the former teacher and inspiration to Ian Dury. Here he visits sites related to famous album covers he has designed or contributed to.
