Grafitti erased and not erased

Two images from a short walk around Whitechapel, East London, this morning. The red wall with erased grafitti is like a huge sculptural impediment planted in the urban landscape. The large tag "2001" faces it across the street and behind this small, decorated building is a huge, brutalist concrete slab - part of the renovation scheme for the East London overground railway, which is presumably connected with the forthcoming London Olympics.
